Sleep Well: Finding the Right Sleeping Bag
Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:
Buy for Cold
It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.
Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.
Goose or No Goose?
The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly and stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use.
All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.
Bags for All Shapes
Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.
Pad Yourself
No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Not only do they provide much-needed comfort when sleeping on the ground, pads also offer crucial warmth for your backside, as the weight of your body compresses--and renders virtually useless--the sleeping bag insulation that lies beneath you.

Light Year Down 40 Degree Sleeping Bag - In Your Choice of Sizes
from Kelty
- Quilt-through construction
- Chevron stitching
- Efficient, form-fitting hood
- Hip-length, two-way locking zipper
- Zipper draft tube with anti-snag design
New for 2008! Updating the features that have made its Light Year series such a trail favorite, Kelty introduces the Light Year Down 40 Degree sleeping bag. With a trail weight under 2 lbs. and compressible down fill, the Light Year Down 40 Degree offers excellent summer and mild-weather performance. The Light Year Down 40 Degree bag is insulated with 650-fill goose down. Down not only has a soft, comfortable feel, it continues to be the insulation with the best warmth-to-weight ratio. The feathers and fibers are renowned for containing body heat and are very easily compressed, taking up less space in your pack. The one downfall to this insulation is that it loses much of its ability to maintain warmth when it gets wet. A polyester microfiber liner provides internal comfort. Quilt-through construction eliminates cold spots, keeping outside air from reaching the inside of the Light Year Down 40 Degree sleeping bag. A contoured hood and draft tube behind the hip-length zipper combine to further insulate against the cold. In balmier weather, an integrated, zippered foot vent allows for added ventilation. Other features found on the Light Year Down 40 Degree bag include internal liner loops, external snap loops that allow the bag itself to be used as a liner, sleeping pad security loops and hanging loops for convenient storage. The Kelty Light Year Down 40 Degree sleeping bag is available in Regular (fits up to 6'0") and Long (fits up to 6'6") lengths. An ultra-light compression stuff sack and storage sack are included.

An array of features and 850+ fill down insulation make the Atom 40 Degree ready for backcountry adventure. The Atom 40 Degree is insulated with certified 850+ fill goose down. Fill power measures the loft or "fluffiness" of down insulation and Marmot goes to great lengths to guarantee the 850+ certification with a battery of in-house and external verifications. Renowned for their efficiency in retaining heat and compressible properties, the feathers and fibers of down have an incredibly soft, comfortable feel and, despite advances in synthetic materials, continue to provide the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any insulation available. The one weakness of down insulation is that it loses much of its ability to maintain warmth when it gets wet. Despite its lightweight construction, the Atom 40 Degree makes no sacrifice with regards to performance and features. Eliminating cold spots and providing comfort, sewn through baffles ensure that the Atom 40 Degree's insulation is distributed evenly throughout the bag. Ground-level side seams create a barrier against cold air. A contoured, ergonomic hood mirrors the design of Marmot's popular outerwear jackets, helps reduce heat loss and keeps your head warm and comfortable. An integrated hood muff snugly protects your face and keeps cold air from sneaking into the Atom 40 Degree. An insulated oversized draft tube sewn behind the full-length zipper keeps cold air from reaching the inside of the sleeping bag and zipper guards help to avoid irritating and damaging snags. Marmot's patented Trapezoid Foot Box is wider at the toes and narrower at the heels, providing a more natural fit and improving warmth and comfort. The Marmot Atom 40 Degree is available in Regular (fits up to 6'0") and Long (fits up to 6' 6") lengths. A stuff sack and storage sack
Fish Hawk 30 Degree Sleeping Bag - In Your Choice of Styles
from Big Agnes
- Integrated pad sleeve. Never roll off your pad again
- Rectangular shape offers more room in foot box and shoulders
- Cotton storage sack & nylon stuff sack included
- Built in pillow pocket holds a fleece or Big Agnes pillow
- Interior fabric loops for sleeping bag liners
New for 2008! With its high-performance goose down fill and a roomy semi-rectangular shape, the Big Agnes Fish Hawk 30 Degree sleeping bag is designed for backpacking in moderate temperatures and warm climates. The Fish Hawk 30 Degree is insulated with 650 fill goose down. Renowned for their compressible properties and efficiency in providing insulation, the feathers and fibers of down have an incredibly soft, comfortable feel and, despite advances in synthetic materials, continue to provide the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any insulation available. Though down fill is susceptible to the effects of moisture, losing much of its performance qualities when damp or wet, the nylon microfiber rip-stop shell fabric of the Fish Hawk 30 Degree does have a surface treatment that helps to repel water. In a traditional sleeping system, the bag lies on top of a sleeping pad. In this configuration, many people find themselves rolling off the pad at night. Plus, the insulation on the bottom of the bag is compressed by the sleeper's weight. Once compressed, the fill loses most of its insulating properties. The Big Agnes Sleep System is different, joining the bag and pad together. The pad slides into a sleeve on the bottom side of the bag, supplying insulation to the bottom of the bag while the top 2/3 of the bag is insulated like a traditional sleeping bag. This design provides a secure foundation so you can roll, twist and turn freely during the night without ever rolling off your pad. It also prevents the bag from twisting and engulfing you in an uncomfortable mess. Big Agnes uses this system throughout their entire line of sleeping bags. The Fish Hawk 30 Degree is available in Reg (fits up to 5'10") and Long (fits up to 6'6") lengths. Once you match your bag with a rectangular sleeping pad of the appropriate dimensions (20" x 72" for Reg and 20" x 78" for Long), spending a night in the Fish Hawk 30 Degree is both warm and comfortable. A number of performance features
