Plastic Training Foil
from Nasycon
These plastic weapons provide a great alternative to metal weapons as you need far less protective equipment and you still get the feel of real fencing. They are the length of a normal size 3 blade and constructed from a single plastic moulding, the weapon is stiff enough to be used as a normal foil but remain flexible enough to ensure the weapon doesn't hurt the fencer. Choose from Blue, or Black. Product Review: From Fencing.Net Reviews ...My club has probably about 50 of these things now and has used them extensively for the past three or four years with our new fencers of all ages. We use the plastic weapons for many of the games where we would once have used gloves - like glove tag. The problem with gloves is that the kids want to wind up their arms to hit, rather than just extending. It's much more difficult to do with these, and the reasons not to wind up are a bit clearer - suddenly your weapon isn't anywhere near the target if you're winding up. Another advantage of using these weapons is that they provide a better way to hold out the "real" weapons as bait to keep the kids coming. It takes our students at least two months to earn the right to use steel, and sometimes several years. These weapons provide them with a tool to use before then. Most of our work using these weapons involves footwork/distance games. They are, however, stiff enough that we have sometimes used them for bladework (at satellite programs where we're already carrying too much gear, for instance). For adults, the weight isn't really an issue, but for our youngest kids, having this lighter version of a weapon is a good way to work up to a dry foil. Same for the plastic masks that come with them. It really makes a big difference for the smallest kids...

This mask is an overall improvement of the basic mask: The mesh is sturdier, the inside lining is attached by Velcro and can be removed to be washed or replaced, the outside of the bib is made of durable and long-lasting nylon. Although this mask does NOT have the noise-reducing head band for non-electric saber, one can still practice sabre in it. Conforms to all domestic requirements: sewn-in bib, 12kg punch test mesh, forehead restraint and back of head elastic restraint, etc. Lining colors vary.
Mens Right Handed Deluxe cotton foil/epee/sabre front zip fencing jacket
from Physical Chess
This is a first competition jacket, fully equipped for convenience, comfort and independence. Strong with double-ply front and front sleeve, it has a front zip to make it easy for the fencer to put on and take off. At the top of the zipper, the neck is secured by a Velcro closure that adjusts for perfect comfort and fit. The cotton fabric "breathes" , allowing body heat to pass through, making hot competition' cooler. Jacket line is neatened and made safe at the button by an adjustable groin strap; and a strongly anchored D-ring presents itself proudly for the first hook-ups to electrical fencing.

From first lesson to first competitions - a good beginner's mask that is also good for all levels of domestic USFA competitions in foil and epee, and is a solid practice mask for ( non-electric) saber with a noise-reducing vinyl head band. Available in 5 sizes, adjustable for custom fit. Outside: strong (passes 12kg punch test) with insulated mesh; pliable, felt-filled sewn-in bib (largest allowable) that lays close to the jacket, protecting the neck, unlike stiff bibs that curl up dangerously around the edges. Inside: lined for comfort with non-irritating fabric; hygienic because lining is cleanable; fitted for extra safety with forehead restraint to prevent mask from jamming against nose in a jarring contact and detachable elastic strap holds the bottom of the head close, just as tab holds in the top. The least expensive multi-featured mask available and a good one, too. Lining and bib colors vary.

A more advanced leather glove for when the beginner becomes more serious, with special features to enhance electrical fencing. The good protection and feel of the leather palm is reinforced by a double-layer of leather over the points of greatest wear, where the handle meets the hand- on thumb, forefinger and lower part of palm. This glove differs from the Basic ( PC G 200) by having the lightly padded back of the hand covered with a rip-resistant layer of cotton which helps point of opponent's blade slide off without setting off a light, a big help in epee and foil. The other difference is that the back of the cuff, further on, is not padded, and thereby continues the potential for slide as well as allowing the cuff to draw in closer and so present less target, while still allowing body cord to snake securely through. A glove with the good blade feel of leather, well thought out features, and very snazzy looking as well. Sold individually.

The Big Book on Fencing - by Rudy Volkmann
from SwordMasters
Magnum Libre d'Escrime "You can’t learn to fence from a book, but you can learn significant things about fencing." Written for the average American fencer, this 271-page text has gotten "must buy" reviews from the British and Dutch fencing federations as well as by current president of the American Fencing Coaches Association (the USFA does not review fencing texts). Included are sections on history, pedagogy, tactics, directing, repair (Dr. Volkmann’s celebrated repair manual is one of the sections), and the plans for a fencing dummy. The main part of the text, though, is a highly illustrated encyclopedia of all the moves used in foil fencing, which includes the theories behind the moves and positions, and detailed explanations of what goes wrong when trying to learn them. Just the section on stance, advance, retreat, lunge, and recovery types take over thirty detailed pages
